Project description
Faringdon Lodge in Romford, Essex was a former care home comprising 23 bedrooms with 14 having en-suite facilities. In June 2021, NHG acquired the property and embarked on a comprehensive refurbishment project to transform it into high-quality supported housing, including individual bathrooms and access to communal areas and a large garden area. The units are individually metered and have a manager’s office, parking and laundry room.
The first step involved stripping out the existing features and remnants of the care home, paving the way for an extensive renovation. As part of the refurbishment 52 solar panels were installed onto the roof and NHG has estimated that just over two-thirds of the energy generated will be used directly by the residents of the building, with the remaining energy being fed back into the national grid. NHG also added double glazing, insulation and eco radiators to help with the resident’s energy usage.
We worked closely with Social Interest Group to ensure that the refurbishment would meet the requirements of the end-users. All the rooms are larger than the minimum requirement for social housing, providing new residents with a comfortable and spacious living space.
Farringdon Lodge is within walking distance of the town centre. Harold Hill town centre has over 60 shops and restaurants. Ranging from small independent specialist retailers to high street stores and restaurants.

I am especially heartened by the way a strong partnership approach and coproduction of support was developed by involving several services to help deliver the wraparound care many homeless people and rough sleepers will need, while they stay and recover in our new service.
